Anger and Boredom

I woke up this morning, and I found my 13 year-old nephew successfully learned on how to ‘flip’ a fingerboard. Turned out he was up all night, which is not a new story because he was always very enthusiastic when it comes to learning something new. But he is also one of the most ‘easily-bored’ teenager I’ve ever known. And when he’s bored, even his parents can’t help him to escape from being angry.
When I think about the word “youth” I always see “anger” right next to it. For me, it is normal for teenagers to have a certain rage inside themselves due to their hormones. But when I see devastating pictures of last weeks’ UK riot, I began to doubt myself. I even read on Twitter, “young people in the middle east are fighting against the government forfreedom, while in England they are fighting for a 42″ LCD television.”These people are not only angry, they are also bored of being poor.

The same condition applies to our country Indonesia. Here, parents from middle and lower economic background are facing difficulties which affects their children. Most parents are already stressed-out by the pressure from work, traffic, and debts. At home, they have kids who are bored, but are forced to accept the difficult condition without questions. With an unleashed energy inside their bodies, these kids are not only bored, but are also unconsciously angry.

As I see my nephew trying to all those fingerboard tricks, I found it hard to believe what his parents told me that he was such an emotional teenager. For me, perhaps he’s just bored. Boredom can come from anything, and not just the condition of NOT doing anything, but also from experiencing something similar over and over again. And when it comes to doing the same thing repeatedly, even adults sometimes lost their patience. Perhaps that is also what cause the UK riots, because those young people are sick and tired of being poor almost all of their life.
